Politics encompasses how we live our lives, theres no doubt about that. If somebody is able to live life and avoid politics then they are privilged, these people most likely being middle classed, white and/or cisgendered. People who dont fit under these catagories have no choice but to interact with politics due to the fact that their entire existance is political to the majortiy of society, Ive met countless people who say "I just dont like politics" and ALL of them have been privileged enough to easily go through life and not have to worry about it, even if it really does affect them, but they simply dont care because "it makes them feel bad" , its an INFURIATING notion to me, reasonably so I believe. (no offense if you are one of these people) Its a thought process born from an ignorance and privilege (take a shot every time i write privilege) but I believe that its not that hard to make and effort to atleast keep up with news, which alot of people who share this viewpoint avoid aswell. There are so many queer people who avoid queer news such as trans people getting their rights taken away, and so many people who claim to care for the lives of others yet grimace and turn away at the mention of Palestine. (although most of the people who ignore trans news are cis) To be knowledgeable is the least you can do, especially for YOURSELF. EVERY SINGLE online queer space ive been in has been filled with people who will do anything to get out of educating themselves, even the ones who claim they are "communist" or "woke". To be fair, most of these people are younger and predominantly online but its also an issue ive noticed in classrooms and ACTUAL political spaces which is even more astounding to me? People who choose to be ignorant will be everywhere ofc, but I feel as if though its gotten worse in recent years, but I also have been into politics since I was basically a toddler and since it was always a big interest of mine it was easy to assume that others cared and noticed how important it was aswell. I think its gotten worse partially due to how "used" to capitalism people have become, so many peoples reaction to the words "socialism" and "communism" is arguments agianst it based off little to no knowledge of the concepts OR dead-set disagreements followed by "i dont know much though", people are so set agianst any other political beliefs yet will do anything but learn because theyre so comfortable the way they are. because they benifit from it wether they like to admit it or not. all these people ive talked to that share this exact ignorance have been white. MANY of them have been queer, mostly cis with the occasional trans person but they have always been white and middle classed and able bodied. I think alot of white "allies" need to realise that true allyship goes BEYOND belief, and that it goes into education and action more than anything. POC people and the physically disabled cannot avoid politics like they can because they have it permanently on display for everyone to judge wether they like it or not.
Alot of queer people like to deny it, but you can be gay and racist! Infact ALOT of them are. Stereotypes of POC will be perpetuated throughout all communities, even in their own (especially their own, I'm filipino, I should know) however the queer community is one that supposed to be accepting, its supposed to feel like family (emphasis on 'supposed to') but its also the community that is insanely exclusionary. The queer community has always been so argumentative, TERFS, the bisexual/pansexual debate, lesboys etc. but when it comes to POC, its an argument thats never said outloud; its instead a social thing, if you pay even a little attention then it becomes apparent that queers of color (especially arabs, africans and hispanics) are treated differently than others. Ive noticed that queer activists that are POC have so much more responsibility put on their shoulders by others and are also the ones that are first to blame when anything goes wrong, they are the scapegoats to the rest of the community, the ones that "make us look bad" the ones that are "too angry" or "too scary". People of color are already excluded from most communities, the queer community is the one that claims to be the most accepting but is one i, and probably alot of other people, find to be so insanely isolating. Im asian, so when it comes to these spaces im treated fairly decently but I still notice that im excluded in some way, maybe its just because im neurodivergent but when able to actually see me, the exclusion is alot more apparent. Arabs, Hispanics and African people face the absolute worst of this exclusion, Africans have to deal with being treated as aggressive women or cold and unforgiving men, Arabs have to deal with being treated as scary terrorsits, etc. all of this ONTOP of the fact they have to deal with being queer and not able to exist safely in that space both inside and out is insane. Prejuidice in the queer community is a huge issue but nobody ever adresses it. thats sorta all i have tosay itends there.
